Since 1987, Covenant House has offered a lifeline for youth facing homelessness, recognizing their inherent goodness and boundless potential. The trauma-informed, resilience-focused care our highly trained staff offers is the product of more than 45 years of experience serving young people facing homelessness. In 2018, we welcomed more than 1,200 parents and babies to houses across our network. Covenant Nursing Home is a non-profit, church-based home for the elderly which strives to provide a high level of care to its residents. Nearly one thousand young people over 18 age out of the Michigan foster care system each year, yet many still need support and services. Several studies show that without a lifelong connection to a caring adult, these older youth are often left vulnerable to a host of adverse situations. It is common for young people facing homelessness to be sexually active, including those who practice survival sex or are trafficked for sex, and they are at higher risk of pregnancy. Knowing they have no safe, stable place to care for and raise their children compounds their already traumatic test of daily survival.

An eviction or foreclosure can force an entire family to become unsheltered and separate. Youth are often left without a permanent home causing them to move from one friend or family’s home to another until they have overstayed their welcome and look for some other type of shelter. In the fall of 1997, Covenant House Michigan opened its doors to Detroit’s young people facing homelessness with the establishment of the Eastside Community Service Center. In less than three years, CHM expanded to include a Street Outreach program , a second Community Service Center and a Job Development Center , and a Crisis Center . In the fourth year of operation, the Rights of Passage transitional living program opened.
